Being one of the primary colours, what is fascinating about blue is that it is the easiest colour to use in colour schemes as it blends in easily with most other colours. Depending on its tone or shade, blue almost acts as a neutral as it sits well with many other hues from the colour wheel. With blue and yellow, blue and greens and blues and pinks being very popular combinations.
What is often forgotten, despite usually being associated with boys and men, blue is actually the least "gender specific" colour, having equal appeal to both men and women. I love a bit of blue, in both interiors and my wardrobe.
It is the colour of the ocean waves on a hot summer's day and has been used for years in interior decorating, especially in warm climates or beach houses. Like the ocean, blue communicates a tranquil emotion that induces peace and serenity it impresses feelings of clarity, order and calm
And due to its calming nature, blue can lower body temperature, pulse rate and blood pressure.
Rich and dark blues are calming and sedate, aid intuition and represent knowledge, power and integrity. Navy blue, especially combined with bright white, gives a crisp, clean feeling to any room. And if you want to tone down the navy blue decor, add a little pale orange (its complementing colour) or yellow; this will offset the navy without distracting from it.
The most common use for blue is in a monochromatic colour scheme, where blues of different shades, tints or tones are combined. This creates a wonderfully tranquil space, sedative and heavenly, ideal for bathrooms or bedrooms.
Another great way to incorporate blue into your design scheme is through colour mixing. Any shade of blue works well when combined with white, which creates an airy and fresh Mediterranean feeling.
For a bit of glamour, mix blue with gold! This is regal and sophisticated and makes a statement no guest can shy away from.
With blue, the options are endless, from the rich tones of classic blue, vibrant elegant Cobalt blues, to the calming Dulux colour of the year 2022, Bright Skies, each tone can be used for creating a luxury space that makes an impact.
